-- Athena gets an upgrade!
Okay, so she didn't get the hardware upgrade we tried to do this year, but we did do a software update. We finally upgraded her to FreeBSD 6.1. This is a big improvement since Athena used to run 4.11. Yeah, that's old. Well, it wasn't much as an upgrade as it was a full system wipe. So Twinwork isn't running 100%. We're still trying to restore the databases and email. So just sit tight until then.

-- Back to normal
Everything was actually back to normal sometime last week Tuesday as a matter of fact. After I resolved the strange webservices problem, I found out there was a dead hard drive in Athena. I don't know if that's what caused it (I doubt it) or maybe it was just a strong correlation (more probable). I headed out to the NOC in LA on Monday night and replaced the dead hard drive and rebuilt the array. The array didn't finish rebuilding until late Tuesday morning. Yeah, that rebuild took awhile, but all is well for now :)

-- Webservices stopped
I have no idea what happened to our web services. It started at around 7PM Pacific. I'm working as fast I can get to get it restored. Ooops...

-- Webmail updated at Twinwork
We are now using the Horde 3 (H3) framework for webmail. It's a lot nicer now... see!

-- Webmail at Twinwork
Now that we got the webmail working at Twinwork, here are some instructions on how to use it. Upon entering the webmail site, you need to enter your email address and password. This works for all emails hosted on Twinwork. So, even if your email address is at singlethread.org or flyhunter.org, you need to type your full email address into the Username section. Type in your password then Log in. Simple, isn't it?
Go ahead and check your Mail. There's also a Calendar for you to use.
Now, if you enabled Spam Detection with qmailadmin, there will be three new folders: dspam-innocent-trainer, dspam-trainer, & spam. If you get spam in your inbox, move it to the dspam-trainer folder. Once every two hours, that email will be processed and deleted. Next time similar email comes through, it will be flagged as spam.
Check your spam folder. If you find innocent email (also called "ham"), then you want to copy it to your dspam-trainer folder and then move it to your INBOX. Remember, anything you move to your dspam-trainer folder will be deleted.
Now, it's good to train dspam (the anti-spam software installed on Twinwork). This is where the dspam-innocent-trainer comes in. Copy all types of innocent ("ham") emails into dspam-innocent-trainer. Any emails in this folder will also be deleted, therefore it is important to copy your innocent emails here and not move it.
That's about it! Oh yeah, and you can still access you mail via POP3 if you like. You can also access it via IMAP, too!

-- DeGeneration and webmail!
DeGeneration finally came out. Play at athena.twinwork.net:27961. Also, we finally got webmail working with Horde/IMP. Login to check your mail.

-- Back to Return to Castle Wolfenstein
I put the RTCW server back up with the Shrubmod. But why, you ask? Well, a new mod is coming out next week called DeGeneration. Check it out. But for now, Shrub will also be on RTCW.

-- More Enemy Territory
The Enemy Territory Shrub server is still up. You can connect to it by dropping the console down and typing /connect athena.twinwork.net:27960 and you will connect to the ET Shrub server. This will be up all summer long. I'm also going to implement an ET stat tracking program so you can see how you all do.
Oh yeah, in case you haven't heard already, Doom3 went gold and it will come out on August 5th. I'll be testing the multiplayer modes of Doom3 and see how it goes. You will definitly see a Doom3 deathmatch on Athena. Happy gaming!

-- Enemy Territory
I'm running the Enemy Territory for most nights starting this summer... Yes, I'm considering mid-May as summer since my semester finished roughly two weeks ago. I figure it's time for some R&R (even though I'm doing software development this summer).
The version of ET running now has Shrub... more specifically, ShrubET. ShrubET is a server-side mod. You don't need to do anything on your client to use ShrubET. You'll download it from the server automatically.
I put a couple of classic maps including mp_beach, mp_ice, and mp_village. There's a map that tried to emulate mp_depot but it's not even close. It's called trainyard and I'll keep it up there for your amusement.
I managed to fix the automatic downloading from the server. It was capped at roughly 15k/sec. I tested the download speed, and I manage to download maps at roughly 400k/sec. I imagine even this speed will not cause a major bandwidth hit on a crowded server. So please, play with us :)

-- Happy New Year!
Okay, so I'm a few days late. I had a few inquires about running Enemy Territory on FreeBSD. The ET server has been up for a couple of weeks now due to my winter break. I played nice and threw it up. We had lots of action during New Years. Come join us :)
As for running ET on FreeBSD, it's quite simple. Make sure you have an updated ports collection. You have to install the linux emulator.
As root, run this command:
root@local~# (cd /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base && make install clean)
Yes, those are parenthesis around the command.
Now, grab ET and the updates for Linux at rtcwfiles.com or wherever you download your games :)
You should have two files. I don't recall their names, but let's call them file1 and file2. You'll need to chmod +x and execute both of them. Still, as root... (if you dare).
root@local~# chmod +x file1 file2
root@local~# ./file1
... installing ...
root@local~# ./file2
... updating ...
You're done with that part. Obviously, you should be in the same directory as those install files in order for them to work. If you left the default installatin, ET should be installed in /usr/local/games/enemy-territory.
This is where the ET on FreeBSD how to ends. I'm not going to teach you how to configure your ET server because 1) I'm a busy person, and 2) there are tons of articles, tutorials, and how-to's on that topic. Just search for them! :)
If you know how to setup a Quake 3 server... they're pretty much the same. Just read the text files, use the example configs, etc... and you'll be fine.
Happy gaming... see you on the battle field. I'll be the one working you ;)

-- Happy 4th of July
Nothing like celebrating your nation by blowing up a piece of it!
Enemy Territory will be up and running all this weekend.
2003 June 03
-- PLAYTIME: Enemy Territory FINAL
Same schedule as TEST, it'll be up whenever DSM or I want to play. Normally it's around 9PM Pacific. We normally play two campaigns then kill it.
2003 May 15
-- DOWNTIME: ET TEST (1)
Actually, it's been down awhile. Bandwidth isn't cheap, so we brought down the ET TEST server down until the final version comes out. I think we did our fair of testing anyway :)
2003 Apr 29
-- DOWNTIME: ET TEST (1)
This ET TEST will be down beginning Wednesday night's last public game until Monday at 2PM. Why? I'm getting my Wisodoms pulled on Thursday and I won't be around for the weekend to start the server.
Why don't I just leave it open you ask? Bandwidth cost money. Unfortunately, I can't make money running an ET TEST server.
If you see DSM around, you can ask him to open it up to the public while I'm gone. Other than that, ET TEST servers are growing everyday. You should have no trouble finding one.
2003 Apr 28
-- PLAYTIME: Schedules
Daily, Enemy Territory TEST (1) will be open to the public between 2:00PM to 9:00PM (Pacific, GMT -8:00) daily; or whenever DSM, Rusty, or I play :)
The Wolftactics server will not be open to the public for the time being.
Again, ET is on athena.twinwork.net:27960.
Punkbuster must be ENABLED if you want to play.
2003 Apr 25
-- PLAYTIME: RTCW: Enemy Territory TEST (1) and RTCW: Wolftactics
You can access our Wolftactics server at athena.twinwork.net:27961.
The ET TEST server is still at athena.twinwork.net:27960.
See below for ET TEST's public server schedule.
2003 Apr 24
-- PLAYTIME: RTCW: Enemy Territory TEST (1)
With the help of DSM, we managed to get the Enemy Territory TEST up and running. The RTCW OSP server has been replaced by this test. You can access it via athena.twinwork.net:27960. A total of 20 gamers can play, but there are 4 private slots. The ET TEST server is public throughout certain points of the day. Honesetly, public access of the server is 1 hour before DSM and I play and 1 hour after DSM and I play :)
Don't like it? Play on a different server. Everyone (broadband) on the west coast gets < 50ms ping to the server. DSM, being on the east coast, still gets a horrible ~110ms ping. Poor DSM...
Tomorrow we will implement the RTCW total conversion mod: Wolftactics. The WT address will be athena.twinwork.net:27961. More information on the WT server when Wolftactics is officially released.
If you want to play on our ET TEST server (want a private slot? clan wants access?), email rtcw@twinwork.net.
Schedule for Athena ET TEST FBSD [LAX] (Times are in Pacific or GMT -8:00):

-- DOWNTIME: DNS goes AWOL!
Our once reliable nameserver, EveryDNS.net, went down around 24 hours ago. I didn't see the difference until someone noticed everything Twinwork related couldn't be accessed. I SSH'd into Athena and everything seemed to be okay. I ended up pinging the machine via one of the many hosts that are aliased to Athena. None of them wanted to resolve! I checked for DNS and it appeared EveryDNS.net did not exist! This caused all Twinwork powered sites to disappear throughout the Internet!
Well, we found another free DNS provider. We're hoping to get away from using third-party nameservers so this will never happen again!
The DNS project begins! We'll be using djbdns for the new nameserver and will create a WWW frontend for administration and client access. This will be a free service for all Twinwork powered sites.
The question is: when will that come about? I'm not too sure when it will be final, but the database and table structures are already complete. The frontend just needs to be written.

-- PROJECT: Welcome Athena!
All I can say is it's about time. We finally have one of our Twinwork servers colocated out in downtown LA with a "Tier-Zero" connection. That's only one hop from one of the nine major backbones in the states. So it's pretty fast.
At first the server's original name was Oasis. But we went with the workstation tradition and gave it a feminine name: Athena. Other addresses related to Athena has been bind to Minerva (Athena's Roman counterpart) and Celes.
It'll take a bit before all sites move from Job to Athena.
2002 Aug 19
-- PROJECT: almost-complete
Okay, twinwork.net is running on a UNIX base operating system. No more Windows! Yup, the last server, Job, finally moved on to FreeBSD 4.6-STABLE. It may take a week or so to get everything settled (DNS, mail, etc), but twinwork.net is finally back!
In other news, I'm sorry to hear the lost of redvain.com.
2002 Jun 1
-- PROJECT: time-to-get-rid-of-windows has begun
twinwork.net has been running on Windows 2000 Server for the past... <counts...> three years now. Well, I guess this would be the 3rd year. The server, Job, is a dual PII-350MHz with 256MB of RAM. We feel he could run much faster on a none-windows server.
So far, the only other non-Windows machine housed at twinwork.net is Link... he's our NATd and mail server. Due to security issues, we want to redo Link to be a strict firewall and house both Job, and once a test machine called Embark now renamed River, are going to be behind the firewall servering what they do best... which is mostly nothing since no one visits twinwork.net
Our machine River, is now running Apache (with mod_ssl and mod_php4) and MySQL. She is also running our backup mail server (with qmail). Check out notes.twinwork.net to see how we've done it. The firewall hasn't been complete yet. And who knows if it ever will since I'm having a horrible time getting IPFilter to work correctly. People keep saying it's my hardware since my configuration is spotless on the dot. I beg to differ since I went through three NICs and have no idea what's going on.
Job - Win2k Server, IIS 5, MS SQL 2k, G6 FTPd
River - FreeBSD 4.6-RC (4.5-STABLE branch), Apache (mod_ssl & mod_php4), MySQL, Pure-FTPd, qmail
Link - FreeBSD 4.4, MySQL (backup for River), qmail
Hopefully we'll move twinwork.net over to River soon. Until then, check out the really neat stuff on River! Wee!
